Lanzarot - 2010/12

Lanzarote is one of the Canary Isles belonging to Spain and located 125km off the African Coast. The good weather all year round makes it a popular destination with an average temperature of over 20 degrees and lots of sun. The landscape is interesting and there are places where volcanic lava makes Lanzarote look like the moon surface.

We like Lanzarote very much, so it is no surprise that we keep returning there. This was our 8th stay on the island. The main reason is the big sport complex La Santa with its open air swimming pool, tennis courts and a great variety of exercise classes held on the lawn overlooking the ocean. The training and cycling facilities are great for Mike. I keep myself busy attending the classes. Therefore our sightseeing plan depended highly on the classes timetable, which 3 of us attended every day.

Xmas in the warm climate doesn’t have as much wow factor as in snowy Poland, but we made some effort to celebrate it.

Everywhere on the island the imptact of Cesar Manrique's impact on the island can be observed. That architect tried to prove that people and nature can coexist together in harmony. Designed by Cesar Jameos del Aqua is very impressive. It is a restaurant and an amphitheatre situated in an old volcano tunnel with a small pond, which is the home for some blind crabs (their only known habitat except the ocean bottom which light doesn’t reach).

Omar Sharif's House is another example of Cesar Manrique's work. Omar fell in love with the house and purchased it during filming on the island. Unfortunately for him, he owned the house for only 1 day as he lost it playing bridge to an English property developer (btw, a European Bridge champion, but Omar didn’t know about it when placing the bet).

Mirador del Rio has a spectacular view of La Graciosa Island and was also designed by Cesar Manrique.

The Cacti Garden (Jardin de Cactus) had wide collection of cacti, from tiny ones to impressive gigiantic ones.






The Volcano National Park of Timanfaya is definitely the main attraction of Lanzarote. In 18th century its eruption lasted for 8 years, which resulted in the entire area being covered by lava. Until now the plants still hasn’t managed to root there. Today the lava is still flowing 1km under the surface and it is so hot that the dry grass sets on fire when thrown into a 2m hole and in places the sand on the surface is too hot to hold in the hand.

In the centre of the park there is a restaurant serving grilled dishes from a volcanic grill (food is grilled over a few-meter hole, no fire required). In the centre of the restaurant there is a fig tree. The legend says that a hermit used to live there with his camel. He dreamed of growing figs so he looked after the tree but it never blossomed because the soil was too warm.

Of course, we couldn’t leave the island without going on a camel ride.

Now it is high time to admit that when Mike was cycling around the island, Daniel and I went for a lazy option and did sightseeing in comfort of a rented car.

Part of the exploration is always to become familiar with the local cousine. The speciality of the island are cannary soup (cheak peas), paella and pimiento don padron (roasted small peppers in sea salt).

Papagaya is another place that the guidebook doesn't shortlist as a must. However, it offers a chance to enjoy a nice walk along the coastline.

It was impossible not to notice the toilet signs. They were so original that on the multiple occasions they made us laugh.

We had a great time and we wouldn’t have been upset if we had had to stay there for another couple of weeks, but unfortunately after 7 days it was time for us to return to the reality and work. Hopefully we will be able to visit Lanzarote again in the near future.

Lanzarot, to obok Tenerify, Gran Canarii, Furventuri i Las Palmas jedna z wysp kanaryjskich usytuowaanych u wybrzezy Afryki. Dzieki polozeniu w strefie zwrotnikowej dobra pogoda utrzymuje sie tu przez caly rok, temperatury wahaja sie w przedziale od 20 do 30 stopni, pada niewiele, a wietrznie jest jak w Chicago. Lanzarot jest stosunkowo malo turystyczna wyspa z wieloma atrakcjami, dobrymi drogami i interesujacym krajobrazem. Sporadyczna zielen i ogrom lawy wulkanicznej przypomina miejscami powierzchnie ksiezyca, gdzie tak a propos zamierzamy wybrac sie w przyszlym roku.:)

Nie da sie ukryc, ze do Lanzarotu mamy slabosc – jest to nasza 8 wizyta. Jednym z powodow naszych czestych tutaj powrotow sa doskonale warunki do trenowania, dobra pogoda, no i ciekawy krajobraz.

La Santa jest duzym osrodkiem sportowym z kortami tenisowymi, silownia, basenami na odkrytym powietrzu i mnostwem klas (od yogi po intensywny aerobik) odbywajacych sie na boisku z widokiem na ocean. I tym razem, mimo ze bylismy z Danielem, nasz caly plan zwiedzania krecil sie wokol rozkladu tych wlasnie klas (we trojke na nie chodzilismy). Z tego tez powodu udalo nam sie pokazac mu tylko 14 z 20 glownych atrakcji wymienionych w przewodniku (14 z 20 = 70%, czyli zdalismy na 3), ale zbytnio sie tym nie zmartwilismy, bo pokazalismy Danielowi wiele lokalnych miejsc w przewodniku niewymienionych choc z pewnoscia na to zaslugujacych.

Swieta Bozego Narodzenia w cieplym klimacie, to nie to samo co w zasniezonej Polsce, ale wspolnymi silami przygotowalismy wigilie, a w pierwszy dzien swiat zjedlismy obiad w wysmienitej restauracji nad oceanem serwujacej owoce morza (pycha).

Na calej wyspie widac wplywy lokalnego architekta Cesara Manrique, ktory postawil sobie za cel udowodnic, ze czlowiek moze wspolistniec w zgodzie z natura. Zaprojektowany przez niego Jameos del Aqua robi niesamowite wrazenie. Jest to restauracja i amfiteatr w zapadlym tunelu wulkanicznym wypelnionym czesciowo slodka woda, ktora stanowi jedyne znane siedlisko slepych krabow poza dnem oceanow.

Dom Omara Sharifa jest kolejnym dzielem Cesara Manrique. Omar zakochal sie w domu podczas krecenia filmu i kupil go. Niestety, byl jego posiadaczem przez tylko jeden dzien, bo przegral go grajac w brydza z angielskim deweloperem (byl on mistrzem Europy w brydzu, ale Omar zasiadajac do gry nie wiedzial o tym). Dzis znajduje sie tam fajna restauracja Lagomar.

Mirador del Rio, z ktorego roztacza sie przepiekny widok na mala wyspe La Graciosa, to kolejny przyklad dorobku Cesara Manrique.

Ogrod kaktusowy (Jardin de Cactus) z ogromna kolekcja kaktusow jest kolejnym sladem pozostawionym na wyspie przez Cesara Manrique.

Najwieksza atrakcja wyspy jest bez watpienia wulkaniczny Park Narodowy Timanfaya. W polowie XVII wieku we wschodniej czesci wyspy miala miejsce potezna erupcja wulkanu, ktora trwala przez 8 lat. W rezultacie w tej czesci wyspy na powierzchni nie ma nic poza zastygla lawa i kraterami. Z kolei niecaly 1km pod powierzchnia wciaz bulgocze lawa. Sa miejsca, gdzie piasek podniesiony z ziemi jest za cieply, zeby go w reku utrzymac, woda wlana do parometrowego otworow eksploduje jak gejzer, a sucha trawa sama sie zapala.

W centrum Timanfaya restauracja serwuje potrawy z grila wulkanicznego (kratki z miesem i rybami umieszczane sa nad kilkumetrowym dolem). W centrum restauracji jest drzewo figowe – legenda mowi, ze pustelnik mieszkal tam przez kilkanascie lat z wielbladem i bardzo chcial, zeby figowiec mial owoce, wiec dogladal swoje drzewko niesamowicie. Niestety zbyt wysoka temperatura podloza spowodowala, ze figowiec nigdy nie zawiazal kwiata.

Oczywiscie pobyt w Lanzarocie nie mogl sie obyc bez przejazdzki na wielbladach.

No i teraz musimy sie przyznac, ze z Danielem leniwie zwiedzalismy Lanzarot jezdzac samochodem i sluchajac jedynego sidi jakie mielismy. A byla to plyta Ziyo z koledami w wersji rockowej. The best number is definitely track number 11 entitled "Lulajze Jezuniu".

Jak przystalo na dobre biuro podrozy "Slon" nie koncentrowalismy sie tylko na zwiedzaniu, ale takze na kuchni kanaryjskiej. Wydaje nam sie, ze nie mozna opuscic Kanarow bez sprobowania zupy kanaryjskiej (podobna do grochowki), paelli (ryz z warzywami, miesem i owocami morza) oraz pimiento don pamdino (male zielone papryczki z grila w soli morskiej).

Papagaya jest kolejnym miejscem niewymienionym w oficjalnej broszurze aczkolwiek fantastycznym z mozliwoscia pojscia na dlugi spacer wzdluz wybrzeza.

Jedna z rzeczy w Lanzarocie rzucajacych sie w oczy po trzech browarach, to oznakowanie WC, bardzo oryginalne naszym zdaniem.

Podsumowujac – fajnie bylo, szybko sie skonczylo i pewnie jeszcze kiedys tu wrocimy, a jako cel podrozy bardzo polecamy. Prawie wszystkie osrodki sa wyposazone w aneksy kuchenne i maja balkony badz/i tarasy. Poruszanie po wyspie wynajetym samochodem jest latwe – drogi sa dobre, a jeden dzien wystarczy na objechanie calej wyspy, bez postoi na zwiedzanie ofkors.:)
